It takes two

Dear Reader:

In light of the recent development in Mexico, let us return to the table and look at the facts. Happy New Year. This is a time of much celebrating, commemorating, and contemplating. One of the things we will probably contemplate is how much we love those we love. How blessed a choice country. How privileged we are to live in a state of relative peace. How critical it is that we all work tirelessly to maintain that peace. Today I would like to concur with Edward Westermark, a revered European anthropologist, on the subject of marriage. Edward Westermark explored the history of this union and its significance with regard to human development. He concluded that the purpose of marriage was to provide a secure environment for the rearing of children. Adult self-interest was not the central component, but children's welfare.
